Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, of the DEA, was working undercover in Mexico, when he was caught, tortured and murdered by drug traffickers in 1985. IDEA, along with the Virginia Federation of Parents, organized the first National Red Ribbon Campaign to recognize Kiki's fight. The red ribbon became the symbol of zero tolerance for illegal drug use and a commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.
